Tradition tells that the conquistador Alonso Ojeda fell on his knees in front of the Caribbean sea, on the white sands of its beaches, once he arrived at Cabo de la Vela after having navigated after long days with uncertainty about his next destination. The Spaniard pioneer was the discoverer of that little piece of heaven on earth inhabited by a large indigenous community formed mostly by Wayuus and rendezvous point of some fishermen from the Cubagua island , from Venezuela, before their migration process to build, without knowing it, what is formerly known as the city of Rioacha.

He named el Cabo de la vela 'Coquivacoa', being convinced that he had discovered an island like the ones he had encountered throughout his trip, a land that he would govern at his own whim. However, Cabo de la Vela was not an island, but instead a scenery lookout filled with deserts without diamonds,, timeless `rancherias', and nightly winds dying as the sun rises in the midst of salty waters from Manaure, right at desert-like department of `La guajira'.

From far, ,after rough paths, and while a 4WD vehicle trips by the wide and openyellow , desert, the intense blue of the Caribbean ocean shines flawlessly, bordered by an infinite line, fades out in a magical horizon brought to you by mother nature.
